The 6-foot-2 model, who hails from Portland, Ore. but has lived in New York for nearly a decade, has walked for everyone from Dolce & Gabbana to DSquared2.
Five days into New York Fashion Week, Chad has already appeared in shows for Gents, Penguin and Perry Ellis. On Monday, Celebuzz caught up with the 29-year-old for a quick Q&A because hey, who doesn’t like to know what goes on in the mind of a male model?
Celebuzz: It’s Fashion Week — what are you most looking forward to seeing?
Chad White: Fashion Week is great because I get to see and catch up with a lot of my friends whoa re usually traveling. I always look forward to meeting with the people who make the brands as well, the designers. There is always so much excitement during Fashion Week — the shows and after parties and just a ton of amazing and talented people coming together to celebrate fashion. You never know who you will meet or what’s going to happen!
CB: What are some pre-show rituals that you can share with us?
CW: A lot of pictures backstage! A lot of joking around and horseplay . . . Some guys do pushups, some guys take naps or listen to music. I like being social though. Backstage you can usually find me walking around and cracking jokes with people. That’s until they call my name and I have to go running for the stage, haha!
CB: Who are some of your biggest fashion role models?
CW: That’s a great question, there are so many amazing people it’s tough to narrow it down . . . Tyson Beckford is the man and has always been someone I’ve looked up to in the industry. I’ve followed Mark Wahlberg‘s career into acting as well, and he is doing some pretty amazing stuff — that is something I wish I could do. I also really admire Will Smith — the way he laughs and smiles through everything.
There are also so many designers that I’ve met and look up to . . . Brian Atwood just recently told me his story of how he and his partner started his brand, after hearing that he’s on the top of my list.
CB: What do you think about when you’re walking down the runway?
CW: I have been doing this for a long time now . . . so I don’t get as nervous as when I first started. The directors of the shows are my friends like Andrew Weir [for ACW] and Drew and they like to tell me to look tough and don’t crack my big smile at the end in front of the cameras, haha. Most of the time I don’t think about anything other then how much fun it is to be a part of the show and walk down the runway . . . until my friends in the seats make faces and try to make me laugh.
CB: What did you have for breakfast this morning?
CW: Well . . . I ate pizza and cookies last night for dinner so . . . my conscience told me I had to break out my juicer for breakfast haha. This morning I went with cucumber, ginger, lemon, green apple, beets and cayenne pepper. I like to eat light in the morning so I can be lighter on my feet in the gym.
CB: How would you describe your personal style? What would we normally see you wear when you’re going to grab coffee or going on a date?
CW: For me simple is a staple. You can never go wrong with a nice pair of jeans and a V-neck t-shirt or button down. If I’m going on a date and dressing it up a bit shoes are usually the key. I’ll trade in my Nikes for some nice black dress shoes. Comfort is also key, especially on a date if I’m already a bit nervous!
CB: What are your visits to Portland like these days?
CW: My home visits are night and day to my New York life. My mom likes to feed me as much as possible because she knows I won’t go back to New York until I am in good shape haha. So she bakes cakes, cookies and brownies everyday trying to sabotage me so I can stay extra days home trying to work off all the sweets haha and she knows I can’t resist mama’s cooking.
But mostly I hang out with my family and friends, have BBQs, drink a few beers (which I normally don’t), go golfing, hiking and walks with my pop. Portland has really changed since I moved away so I really enjoy exploring the new aspects of the city and getting in as much nature as I can before I come back to the city life.
