CBS Cancels Rihanna’s ‘Thursday Night Football’ Theme Song Amid Ray Rice Domestic Violence Scandal

Rihanna and Chris Brown have an awkward run-in.
Last week, CBS and the NFL announced that Thursday Night Football would be debuting a new theme song: “Run This Town” by Jay Z and Rihanna.

However, amid the controversy surrounding Ray Rice’s domestic abuse scandal and the release of a video showing him punching his wife Janay, CBS has decided to cancel the debut.

While the network didn’t explicitly state why they’ve pulled the plug on the new song, it’s fairly obvious a song featuring Rihanna–who is a domestic abuse victim–wouldn’t sit well with the audience and isn’t morally correct.

CBS Sports Chairman Sean McManus said, “It’s important to realize we are not overacting to this story but it is as big a story as has faced the NFL.  We thought journalistically and from a tone standpoint, we needed to have the appropriate tone and coverage.  A lot of the production elements we wanted in the show are being eliminated because of time or tone.”

The pre-show segment was originally supposed to be a comedic sketch featuring Don Cheadle doing a narration over Jay Z’s part in “Run This Town.”

It will now be replaced by a segment featuring Norah O’Donnell.
