Joan Rivers’ Doctor Fired Amidst Conflicting Reports of Unauthorized Biopsy

R.I.P. JOAN RIVERS
Of course Joan Rivers had already planned her lavish funeral.
Dr. Lawrence Cohen, the gastroenterologist who performed Joan Rivers’ endoscopy that ended in the comedian’s death, has been fired.

The former medical director of Yorkville Endoscopy was asked to step down by the board, and has been on administrative leave since the day of Rivers’ procedure.

While the board does not place the onus for Rivers’ passing on Dr. Cohen, its actions are allegedly prompted by the doctor’s approval of an unauthorized procedure. Rumors have been swirling that the 81-year-old’s death was caused by an unplanned biopsy performed by Joan Rivers’ ear, nose and throat doctor.

The ENT doctor reportedly traveled with Rivers to the clinic, and upon another doctor’s discovery of “something” on the comedian’s vocal cords, performed a biopsy that caused Rivers’ vocal cords to seize up.

Yorkville Endoscopy has fought against these allegations, claiming that “A biopsy of vocal cords has never been performed at Yorkville Endoscopy.” Last week, it was reported that the clinic, which opened its doors in 2013, is being investigated by the New York State Department of Health.
