Reese Witherspoon Speaks Out on 2013 Arrest: She’s Not Who We Thought She Was

When Reese Witherspoon was arrested in 2013 for disorderly conduct, I think it’s safe to say everyone was fairly taken back.

Witherspoon has always held a persona in the public eye as this “American Sweetheart” who could do no wrong, but the video of her arrest gave the world some new insight into the actress.

While promoting her new movie Wild during a press conference at the BFI London Film Festical Monday, the 28-year-old reflected on the infamous arrest.

“I think it was a moment where people realized that I wasn’t exactly what they thought I was,” she admitted.  “I guess maybe we all like to define people by the way the media presents them, and I think that I showed I have a complexity that people didn’t know about.”

She added, “It’s part of human nature.  I made a mistake.  We all make mistakes.  The best you can do is say sorry and learn from it and move on.”

Witherspoon and her husband Jom Toth were arrested in Atlanta in 2013 after Toth was pulled over for driving while intoxicated, and after she tried to defend her husband to the police, Witherspoon was arrested for disorderly conduct.

After news of the incident broke, the actress issued a statement of apology regarding her behavior: “Out of respect for the ongoing legal situation, I cannot comment on everything that is being reported right now. But I do want to say, I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said. It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that is no excuse.”
