Sarah Hyland Opens Up About Abusive Relationship With Matt Prokop

Sarah Hyland has been keeping quiet about her breakup with Matt Prokop — until now.

The Modern Family star, who was recently granted a three-year restraining order against her ex after he threatened to harm the actress and her dog, is opening up about her abusive relationship. Speaking with Meredith Vieira — who herself had been a victim of domestic violence in the past — on her talk show, the 23-year-old says that “people have to go through things in order to become the person that they are today.”

“There are two quotes that I want to say. One is a Dylan Thomas poem, ‘Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light,’ which is one of my favorite poems,” Hyland says when asked about how she manages to overcome her “adversity.”

She continues, “It just strikes a chord in me and also Robert Frost, ‘The only way out is through.’”

According to legal documents pertaining to Hyland and Prokop’s case, the Geek Charming actor had allegedly “terrorized [Hyland] both verbally and physically during the last 4 years of their relationship.” Hyland claimed that her then-boyfriend had choked her during one explosive argument, recalling in detail that “his grip was so tight that I could not breathe or speak. I was scared and in fear of my life.”

When Hyland sought her onscreen mom, Julie Bowen, for help with her breakup, Prokop reportedly threw a lighter at his girlfriend for five-years and “ran outside into the backyard and began screaming” when he realized what was happening. Prokop also “threatened to set one of [Hyland’s] homes on fire and threatened that she would never see her dog (Barkley) again.”
