Actor Bradley Cooper revived his role as Joseph Merrick, in the play The Elephant Man. It is based on Merrick’s life, a 19th century British man who became a star of the traveling freak show circuit. When a renowned doctor takes Merrick under his care at the London Hospital, he is astonished by Merrick’s brilliant intelligence and unshakable faith.

During the production, the 39-year-old Cooper could be seen practically naked in a bathtub, contorting his clean-shaven face in order to bring Merrick’s tragic tale to life without the use of make-up or prosthetics as was done in the film version of the play.

Cooper is joined on stage by a cast that includes Patricia Clarkson and Alessandro Nivola.

The play officially opens on Sunday, December 7 at the Booth Theatre in New York City for a limited run engagement which ends on Sunday, February 15, 2015.
