As if he couldn’t get anymore British, Benedict Cumberbatch broke fangirls’ hearts everywhere announced his engagement to theater director Sophie Hunter earlier this month by putting out a classified ad in newspaper The TimesSo, what made the Sherlock star pull the old school move?

Here’s his explanation.

“It’s what I would have done if I wasn’t famous. It’s a normal thing to do in my country,” he told USA Today. “It was a way of telling our friends who we hadn’t been able to tell before [they saw] some grainy shot of a ring on her finger.”

In all traditional pomp and circumstance, Cumberbatch also named his parents, Wanda and Timothy, as well as his fiancée’s folks, Katharine and Charles, in the announcement.

Cumberbatch, 38, and Hunter, 36, first met on the set of Burlesque Fairytales in 2009 but did not start dating until earlier this year.

And now, the world waits with baited breath for that first grainy photo of Hunter’s engagement ring.
