How About No: Jessie J and Ariana Grande Are Covering ‘The Boy Is Mine’

Lovers of classic late-’90s duets, prepare to have your hearts (and, potentially, eardrums) broken.

Producer Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins announced a new “20th anniversary project” that will feature covers of songs from his storied career. Included in this project will be a cover of Brandy and Monica’s classic “The Boy Is Mine,” which Darkchild produced, sung by Jessie J and Ariana Grande.

In case you’d forgotten how good the original “The Boy Is Mine” was — and still is! — please take a few minutes to reacquaint yourself:

Jessie and Ariana have, of course, collaborated before — on Jessie’s “Bang Bang,” which also featured Nicki Minaj  but the news of this cover is at least twenty steps over the line of what is right and acceptable.

As bad as this is, it could have been worse. Just imagine:

Rita Ora as Brandy and Demi Lovato as Monica

OR

Demi Lovato as Brandy and Rita Ora as Monica

OR

Lea Michele as either Brandy or Moncia

OR

Lea Michele as both Brandy and Monica because she refuses to share credit with anyone

So yes, this is bad. But look on the bright side. Glass half full (of whiskey, ‘cuz that’s what we’ll need to get through this).

Darkchild’s 20th anniversary project is set to be released sometime in 2015, and aside from “The Boy Is Mine” cover, we only know that Sam Smith will contribute a cover of Whitney Houston’s “It’s Not Right, But It’s Okay.”

These are classics, people! Classics!
