Taylor Swift Backlash ’14: Katy Perry’s Producer vs. Swift, Swift vs. Jessica Hart

Taylor Swift is experiencing the best year of her still-very-young career. Two No. 1 singles, the biggest album of the year, and a near Beyoncé-level of ubiquity and acclaim.

So what’s next for Swift? The inevitable wave of post-1989 backlash, of course. This wave officially starts today with two stories: the first claims a vengeful Swift got model Jessica Hart axed from the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, and the second involves some shade thrown by a collaborator of Swift’s nemesis, Katy Perry. And so it begins.

First up: Daily News reports that Victoria’s Secret model Jessica Hart, who was not present at this week’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, was the victim of Swift’s vindictiveness. How so? According to Daily News, Swift requested that Hart be cut from the show. Why would Swift request such a thing? Well, you might recall that last year, Hart remarked that Swift “didn’t fit” with the Victoria’s Secret crowd. She later apologized for her remarks, but apparently, for Swift, it was too little, too late.

“It’s not been announced that Jessica is not walking, but it was a direct request from Taylor that this be the case if she were to go,” a source told Daily News. “No one can know that Taylor requested Ms. Hart not be in the show. They want to keep that under wraps, but that’s the facts.”

Victoria’ Secret chief marketing officer, Ed Razek, denies that this is true. He claims that, despite not walking in this year’s show, Hart is still employed by the company. (This doesn’t actually address the reason why she didn’t walk in this year’s show, however.)

The second story involves a record producer, Greg Wells, who worked with Katy Perry on “Waking Up in Vegas” and other hits. As is common knowledge by know, Swift and Perry detest one another. Wells tweeted the following two messages about Swift’s new album sounding like “Katy Perry lite”:

So there you have it. Perhaps Perry was right; maybe Swift is a “Regina George in sheep’s clothing.” Perhaps some people are tiring of all the praise Swift has received for a rather generic-sounding pop album. Welcome to Taylor Swift Backlash ’14. More updates to come, surely.
