Jordin Sparks Explains Why She Decided to Shade Jason Derulo in her New Song

When Jason Derulo and Jordin Sparks split earlier this year, it seemed like a mutual, amicable breakup… But then Sparks went on to release her new song that straight slammed her ex.

In the song, a remix of Drake’s “How Bout Now,” the 24-year-old songstress trashes Derulo for letting fame get to his head and basically tells him he sucks… A tone we’ve never heard out of her before.

“I knew it was going to get crazy,” the American Idol winner told E! News while promoting Microsoft Lumia’s Make It Happen campaign. “I was nervous to put it out there because no one had ever heard me like this before.”

So what made her write the spiteful lyrics?

“Every day was different and every day something new came out [during writing and recording sessions],” she explains about working on her upcoming album Right Here, Right Now.  “And that day I was having one of those days where I was like, ‘I’m just going to do it and I want my fans to hear this side of me. They need to hear it.'”

She continues, “My fans wanted to hear something but at the same time it wasn’t really planned, and I just went into the studio and whatever came out, came out.”

The result? Some pretty harsh hits at her ex.  But that’s not to say Sparks hasn’t moved on.

“I’m actually probably in the best place I’ve been in, like, years,” she said. “I feel like I am in the best place mentally, spiritually, physically, emotionally…Everything just feels really good.”

But she’s also not looking for new romance.  Much like Taylor Swift, she’s beating to the sound of her own drum.

“I’m dating myself for sure,” Sparks said with a laugh. “I’m really not in any space to be in a relationship with anybody. I have too much stuff to do. I haven’t had time for distractions like that right now.”
