Ariana Grande’s Ex-Boyfriend Wrote a Song About Their Breakup
The Wanted’s Nathan Sykes has penned a track about his split with Ariana Grande. Speaking with The Sun, the British singer, who has been working on a solo project since his band announced their indefinite hiatus, says the song helped him deal with unresolved emotions that stemmed from their short-lived romance.
“The most emotional song is about me telling myself not to be angry at the break-up because sometimes things just don’t work out,” Sykes, who briefly dated Grande in late 2013, says. “That’s life.”
“It’s important not to be selfish with writing so there’s no detailed version of event,” he continues of the track. “And there’s no bad blood. She’s a lovely girl.”
According to Sykes, his relationship with Grande didn’t work because of their respective hectic schedules.
“We split because of the long-distance thing,” he explains. “There was that amazing moment at the start of the relationship where we both convinced ourselves, ‘Yeah, long distance won’t matter. It will be fine.’ But it was impossible.”
Sykes and Grande, both 21, went public in September 2013 after meeting one another while collaborating on a duet, “Almost Is Never Enough,” for The Mortal Instruments soundtrack. At the time, Grande’s ex, YouTube star Jai Brooks, accused the songstress of cheating on him with Sykes.
