Plus-Size Model Ashley Graham Makes ‘Sports Illustrated’ History with Swimsuit Ad

There’s a first time for everything, even if your publication is called Sports Illustrated.

The popular magazine will make history next week with the release of its annual Swimsuit Issue, which will feature, for the first time ever, an ad starring a plus-size model.

The model, Ashley Graham, is the face of swimsuitsforall, a plus-size bathing suit company.

“I know my curves are sexy and I want everyone else to know that theirs are too,” Graham said in a statement for the #curvesinbikinis campaign. “There is no reason to hide and every reason to flaunt.”

The ad campaign comes just off the heels of the 27-year-old model’s essay in The Edit magazine.

“Young girls don’t have much to look at, curvy women are not on the covers of magazines, they’re not talked about on social media as much as other celebrities. Jennifer Lawrence is the media’s poster girl for curves — she’s tiny,” she wrote in December.

“There needs to be more education in schools, because that’s where eating disorders start. It’s not just about being healthy; it’s also about loving who you are. If you don’t love who you are, you are never going to feel 100 percent satisfied in life. It all starts with you. If you don’t love you, nobody else is going to be able to.”
