Shirley Manson of Garbage may have found what Kanye West did at this year’s Grammys to be disrespectful, but John Legend doesn’t think it’s all that bad. In fact, the “All of Me” singer, who is one of West’s close friends, finds the rapper’s onstage interruption to be quite humorous.

“I thought it was funny,” Legend told Us Weekly. “I looked at it as just a funny thing that people were going to talk about.”

On Sunday night, West got up onstage when Beck accepted his award for Album of the Year. Mimicking his infamous antics at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, where he stole Taylor Swift’s microphone when she beat out Beyoncé for a trophy, the Yeezus hitmaker jokingly walked up to the podium as if he’d interrupt Beck’s speech before before turning around.

West later ranted to the press about how Beck was less deserving of the award than Beyoncé, saying, “Beck knows that Beyoncé should’ve won. You know that… C’mon, I love him. But he [can’t] have Album of the Year.”

“It didn’t hurt anybody,” Legend, 36, continued. “Anybody who’s upset just needs to relax. It was funny.”

And even Beck seemed to have thought so too.

“I was just so excited he was coming up,” Beck said of West’s interruption. “[West] deserves to be onstage as much as anybody. How many great records has he put out in the last five years, right?”

“I thought she was going to win. Come on, she’s Beyoncé! … You can’t please everybody, man. I still love [West] and think he’s genius. I aspire to do what he does.”
