Apparently, Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin’s famous “conscious uncoupling” was a process years in the making.

Speaking with Marie Claire Australia, Paltrow revealed that that she had parted ways with the Coldplay frontman two years before actually officially announcing their split. According to the Oscar winner, she had began the separation process while filming Mortdecai in 2012 and even asked co-star Johnny Depp, who was going through a breakup of his own with longtime girlfriend Vanessa Paradis at the time, for advice.

“Nobody knew what Chris and I had been going through, so I didn’t say, ‘Hey, this is what’s happening,’ but I did ask him mostly children-centric questions, like, ‘How is it on them?’ and ‘How did you do it?'” Paltrow said, before adding of the split, “It’s very sad. You have an expectation of your life, and it’s sad to change that expectation.”

According to the 42-year-old, there was “nothing dramatic” about the break-up and the two agreed upon focusing their energy on being good parents to their two children.

We’ve worked really fucking hard to get to [this] point. But we’re very, very close, and it’s so nice. I feel like it’s, in a way, the relationship we were meant to have,” she said.

“I think we are all genuinely doing our best, it’s hard to have children and a career, and all some women seem to do is judge other women’s choices. I find that demoralizing and unhelpful,” the actress continued on the topic of raising her kids, Apple, 10, and Moses, 8. “Where is the wisdom coming out of this situation? I don’t see where this is getting us anywhere in terms of a cultural discussion.”

Paltrow and Martin, 37, were married for 10 years. Martin has since moved on with The Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence.
