Modern Fashion Inspired by Julia Roberts’ Iconic ‘Pretty Woman’ Looks
On March 23, 1990, a romantic comedy came into the world that would change everyone’s lives forever: Pretty Woman.
Okay, so maybe I’m being a bit overzealous, but the film definitely had an impact on women — not only with it’s message about never settling for anything less than a man who slides you across a piano to make love to you, but also with it’s stellar choice of fashion that proved women could be sexy, confident and classy all at the same damn time.
In honor of the film’s 25th anniversary today, we’re channeling our inner Vivian Ward and taking a look back at three of Julia Roberts’ most iconic fashion statements, letting them inspire us for our own modern day looks. And the best part? While Vivian may have been able to spend a pretty penny on her ensembles, each outfit we curated is from TJ Maxx and Marshalls, so we get to ditch that hefty price tag (since, you know, most of us don’t have a hot millionaire paying for our shopping sprees). Check it out:
1. Power Player Red. While we may not wear a red gown out and about today, there’s definitely a cause for wearing a powerful red hue in our everyday lives. Red — even if it’s just a pop-of-red with your shoes or purse — is a total confidence booster and can give add a seriously powerful touch to any ensemble.
2. White Knight. This button-down white dress and matching, over-sized black hat is one of the classiest every-day looks Vivian rocked in the film. In fact, it’s something we’d still likely wear today. White-on-white is a major trend for spring, and an over-sized hat is an essential to any woman’s closet!
3. Sexy Yet Classy in Black. Every woman should have a little, black dress (or five) because it’s essential for several major life occasions. However, it doesn’t always have to be a dress. An LBJ — little, black jumpsuit — has also become a modern-day staple. Lace is a power player in the LBD department, adding that hint of sexy to an otherwise classy ensemble. Finally, when it comes to accessories something sparkly — like a jeweled clutch or chunky earrings — adds a boost of girly confidence to any black-on-black look.
