Channing Tatum is the voice of Joaquin, a macho military hero, in the animated film, The Book of Life, and he reveals why he was perfect for the part.

According to the film’s producer Guillermo del Toro, the Magic Mike XXL star, who was spotted about and about yesterday in Studio City (April 1, 2015), had “the swagger and the charm” to play the part of moustache-wearing Joaquin!

He said:

We wanted Joaquin to be like the high school quarterback, and we agreed that Channing was perfect. He has the swagger and the charm.

When I first pitched it to Channing, he was really into it. But then he took me aside and said, ‘Jorge, you know I’m not Mexican, right?'”

The animated film comes off as a Tim Burton film, with an infusion of Mexican culture. It is about Manolo (voiced by Diego Luna), a young man who is torn between fulfilling the expectations of his family and following his heart, who embarks on an adventure that spans three fantastic worlds where he must face his greatest fears.

The Book of life has been receiving mixed reviews. While some say it’s an impressive debut by director Jorge R. Gutierrez, others are saying the story is not necessarily the strongest, however the animation is quite phenomenal.

Other cast members include Christina Applegate, Ron Perlman, Ice Cube, Hector Elizondo, Cheech Marin, Danny Trejo, and Gabriel Iglesias.
