Though it feels like just yesterday we were laughing along as her teenage self graced the television during the Amanda Show, Amanda Bynes is all grown up, turning the big 29 today.
It feels like we’ve watched the troubled star grow up before our eyes. She made her first television debut in 1999 at just 13 years old, which was just the beginning of a hefty career as a child star.
Not only did she play characters on several television gigs, but she also landed huge roles on the silver screen in films like What a Girl Wants and She’s the Man — many teens’ favorite flicks from back in the day.
However, as Bynes got older and jobs became more seldom, the actress began acting out. In 2012, she was arrested for a DUI, and in 2013 was sent to jail for throwing drug paraphernalia at police officers. After she reportedly started a fire in a suburban neighborhood driveway, Bynes was put on psychiatric hold, and shortly thereafter her parents became her conservators.
Last year she showed signs of hope for a turnaround, heading back to school to get her degree in fashion and even living on her own. However, in Oct. 2014, she began displaying signs of bizarre behavior again, shoplifting and creating rumors about being engaged.
She was placed on another psychiatric hold later that month after claiming that her father sexually abused her. The actress was released a few weeks later, and spent the following weeks acting out on Twitter, sleeping on mall couches and living off gift cards.
Bynes has been quiet as of late, but we hope she’s enjoying a happy 29th birthday.
