Cobie Smulders: I Was Diagnosed With Ovarian Cancer

Hollywood kicks cancer's butt.

Cobie Smulders just revealed that she had been secretly battling ovarian cancer.

In the May 2015 issue of Women’s Health, the Canadian actress opened up about her diagnosis, explaining that she had found out when she was only 25 during the third season of How I Met Your Mother.

“I had tumors on both ovaries,” she said, “and the cancer had spread into my lymph nodes and surrounding tissues.”

According to Smulders, it took multiple surgeries over the course of two years to remove the cancerous tissue.

Though the disease is now in remission, the 33-year-old, who since had two children with Saturday Night Live star Taran Killam, said she never really feels like the fight is truly over.

“I don’t think I’ll ever feel like I’m cancer-free,” Smulders continued. “Now that I’m five years out, I’m trying to think of it as a positive thing and what can I learn from it. And if I can create more awareness, I’ll do it.”

In the same article, Smulders also talked about being comfortable with posing topless on the cover, saying:

“It was my first topless photo shoot where I wasn’t trying to appear ‘sexy’, which was interesting. Because it’s a women’s magazine, I feel like being topless is more about being confident and about being happy with your body rather than trying to excite somebody else. That’s what this cover was more about.”
