‘Everybody Loves Raymond’ Child Actor Sawyer Sweeten Dead at 19 of Apparent Suicide

Sawyer Sweeten, a child actor best known for his role on the popular American sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond, has passed away of apparent suicide. Sweeten’s manager confirmed the news to Variety on Thursday (April 23, 2015).

Sweeten played one of the twins on the television show, Geoffrey Barone, while his twin bother Sullivan played his twin, Michael, and his older sister Madylin Stweeten played his TV sister Ally. Ray Romano and Patricia Heaton played their TV parents on the Emmy-winning show, which ran for 9 years (from 1996 until 2005).

Madylin made a statement, E! news reports, that read:

This morning a terrible family tragedy has occurred. We are devastated to report that our beloved brother, son, and friend, Sawyer Sweeten, took his own life. He was weeks away from his 20th birthday. At this sensitive time, our family requests privacy and we beg of you to reach out to the ones you love.

She wrote on Facebook earlier yesterday, “At this time I would like to encourage everyone to reach out to the ones you love. Let them have no doubt of what they mean to you.”

Romano also made a statement to E! news saying he was “shocked and terribly saddened” by the news.

“He was a wonderful and sweet kid to be around,” Romano added. “Just a great energy whenever he was there. My heart breaks for him, his family and his friends during this very difficult time.”

Heaton tweeted,

Doris Roberts, who played Sawyer’s grandmother, paid tribute to him on Facebook writing:

It is with great sadness that I learned the news that Sawyer Sweeten, who played my grandson Geoffrey Barone on ‘Everybody Loves Raymond,’ died at his family’s home in Texas. He was a very sweet young man who will be dearly missed. Make sure your loved ones know how much you care about them, and please check in with them if you haven’t touched base with them for a while. It’s very important to keep in touch.

Radar Online broke the news and reported that Sawyer was visiting family in Texas, where it’s believed he shot himself on the front porch.

Sawyer and his brother were only 16 months old when they started on the show. He and his two sibling’s last public appearance was at the 2010 TV Land Awards.

Our hearts go out to the Sweeten family.
