15 Photos of Patrick Dempsey to Help You Cope with Last Night’s ‘Grey’s Anatomy’
For those of you who are caught up on the latest episode of Grey’s Anatomy, you’re probably curled up in the fetal position covered in tears and ice cream. We’re here to let you know that you’re not alone.
After 11 years, Patrick Dempsey (aka Dr. McDreamy) made his shocking exit on last night’s episode after being involved in a fatal accident. His character’s death didn’t come as much of a surprise, though, as creator Shonda Rhimes had foreshadowed his departure in episodes prior.
Less than a week after filming his final episode, Dempsey sat down for an interview with Entertainment Weekly in which he touched on the inevitable heartbreak of his fans.
He said, “I think it will be very shocking, the way it happens. It’s really going to be powerful. But life is like that. I think any time an original cast member has left, there’s always a void that will never be filled. Shepherd is a beloved character. People don’t want to lose him. He’s been in their lives for over 10 years. But it goes on, and it will evolve.”
A source told Page Six that, “Patrick has been acting like a diva and has clashed with [creator Shonda Rhimes]. She suspended him for a while, and the word on set is that he isn’t coming back full time. Given all the past problems with Katherine Heigl and Isaiah Washington, there is little tolerance on the show for troublesome talent.”
Shonda Rhimes also released this statement to EW:
“Derek Shepherd is and will always be an incredibly important character—for Meredith, for me and for the fans. I absolutely never imagined saying goodbye to our ‘McDreamy.’ Patrick Dempsey’s performance shaped Derek in a way that I know we both hope became a meaningful example—happy, sad, romantic, painful and always true—of what young women should demand from modern love. His loss will be felt by all. Now, Meredith and the entire Grey’s Anatomy family are about to enter uncharted territory as we head into this new chapter of her life. The possibilities for what may come are endless. As Ellis Grey would say: the carousel never stops turning.”
The Grey’s community will undoubtedly mourn the loss of the admired brain surgeon for centuries to come. However, to help you bounce back from the stress of such a dark and painful time, launch the gallery above to remember Patrick Dempsey with some of his McDreamiest Moments.
