Bruce Jenner’s Mom Esther Calls Diane Sawyer’s Interview ‘Very Educational’
Esther briefly appeared in the ABC special that was watched by millions, in which the 65-year-old former Olympian and TV personality details his struggle with gender identity, and reveals he is transitioning to a woman.
She told him in the aired footage:
“I want you to be happy, and I love you. I was very proud of you when you stood on that podium in Montreal – I never thought I could be more proud of you, but I’m learning I can be.”
Access Hollywood first caught up with the grandmother-to-be (Bruce’s son Brandon and his wife Leah are expecting their first child) on Friday when she said she wouldn’t be tuning in to her son’s emotional sitdown.
But, in fact, the 88-year-old did decide to watch and gave her reaction. Mrs. Jenner told Access Hollywood’s Stephanie Bauer exclusively on Saturday, “I think that 20/20 and Diane Sawyer did a fabulous job. I think it was very educational and I hope to get more education.”
On whether or not she’s spoken to Bruce since their airing, she added, “I don’t want to bring it up with him.”
Esther Jenner was previously in the news because she confirmed to Radar Online he was transitioning to a woman back in early February, before anyone else. At that time, she shared, “Right now I am more proud of him for what he’s allowing himself to do. I am more proud of him now than when he stood on that podium and put the gold medal around his neck. He deserves all the respect.”
Bruce’s entire family has spoken out on social media, calling him their “hero” and sharing their loving support; many celebrities have also shown their support for Bruce and applauded him for his bravery in speaking out.
(As noted in previous articles, for the interview, Jenner referred to himself using male pronouns, said he preferred the pronoun “he” and has not yet indicated that he’d like to be known by a female name or with female pronouns. Furthermore, Sawyer called him Bruce, so Celebuzz will use male pronouns and continue to refer to him as Bruce with that lead).
