Joni Mitchell Is Reportedly in a Coma, Singer’s Website Says Otherwise [UPDATE]

Legendary singer Joni Mitchell’s health has taken a turn for the worse.

According to TMZ, the Canadian crooner’s close friend of 44 years, Leslie Morris, has filed documents to obtain a conservatorship over the 71-year-old’s affairs as Mitchell is under a coma. According to reports, the songstress is currently unresponsive with “no immediate prospects for getting better.”

In the legal papers, Morris says Mitchell has no close relatives who could assume the role of a conservator.

Mitchell was first admitted to the hospital on March 31 after she was found unconscious in her Los Angeles home. The music icon’s website later reported that the singer was “under observation in the hospital and is resting comfortably,” noting on April 3, “We are encouraged by her progress and she continues to improve and get stronger each day.”

UPDATE: Though reports claim Mitchell is unresponsive, a statement on her website insists the singer is “alert.” It reads:

Contrary to rumors circulating on the Internet today, Joni is not in a coma. Joni is still in the hospital — but she comprehends, she’s alert, and she has her full senses. A full recovery is expected. The document obtained by a certain media outlet simply gives her longtime friend Leslie Morris the authority — in the absence of 24-hour doctor care — to make care decisions for Joni once she leaves the hospital.
