Today is Denim Day, a fashion-forward Sexual Violence Awareness Month demonstration in solidarity with victims of sexual assault.

Peace Over Violence, a non-profit, feminist, community-based volunteer organization, began the Denim Day campaign 16 years ago in response to an unjustly overturned rape case by the Italian Supreme Court.

An 18-year-old girl was driving with her 45-year-old driving instructor on an isolated road when he pulled out of the vehicle, wrestled her to the ground, and pulled one leg free from the confines of her skinny jeans. He proceeded to rape her, threatening death upon disclosure before forcing her to drive home.

The girl recounted this instance to her parents who helped her press charges against her assailant. He was arrested, prosecuted, convicted of rape, and sent off to the slammer, but still had the nerve to appeal his sentence. The driving instructor’s case made its way through the ranks of the Italian government, arriving on the floor of the Supreme Court. He was released from jail when his trial was dismissed with this rationale by the Chief Judge:

Because the victim wore very, very tight jeans, she had to help him remove them, and by removing the jeans it was no longer rape but consensual sex.

The very next day, women in the Italian Parliament wore jeans to show support of the young girl. This bold move internationally inspired the California Senate and Assembly to follow in suit, spreading to the Executive Director of Peace Over Violence, Patricia Giggans, and thus Denim Day was born.

This year the Guess Foundation will boomerang the campaign to Europe, starting with Italy — where the inciting incident occurred.

Paul Marciano, the CEO and creative director of Guess, had this comment on Denim Day’s arrival in Italy:

We feel a strong duty to increase the media attention on this issue in Italy. In recent years, the commitment to this has grown; however, the statistics indicate that there is still much to do and to say.

We feel the same way, so here is some vintage celebrity outfispiration to help you decide on a Denim Day ensemble:
