‘Star Trek’ Actress Grace Lee Whitney Dies at 85

'Star Trek' Actor Leonard Nimoy Dead at 83
It's a sad day in the Star Trek fandom as Leonard Nimoy has died.

Grace Lee Whitney, the actress who played Yeoman Janice Rand on Star Trek: The Original Series, died Friday (May 1, 2015) in her home in Coarsegold, Calif. She was 85.

Whitney, famous for playing Captain Kirk’s assistant, died of natural causes according to her son Jonathan Dweck.

A recovering alcoholic, she spent the last 35 years of her life helping others with addiction problems, some of whom she met at Star Trek conventions she would regularly attend.

“Over time, she became appreciative of her short time on Star Trek because she developed meaningful relationships with the fans, Leonard Nimoy (who passed away in February), and other cast members,” her son said in a statement.

William Shatner, who played Whitney’s boss, tweeted the following today (May 4, 2015).

Whitney also appeared in several Star Trek films, including Star Trek: The Motion Picture, The Search for Spock, The Voyage Home, and The Undiscovered Country.
