Blythe Danner: People Are ‘Intimidated’ by Gwyneth Paltrow Because She’s ‘Accomplished’

Blythe Danner has some things to say to all of Gwyneth Paltrow’s haters.

During an appearance on the Today show, the legendary actress, 72, gushed about her daughter, who has often been the subject of media speculation for everything from Goop to her “conscious uncoupling” (and eventual divorce) from Chris Martin.

Oh, and there was that whole vagina steaming thing, and that time she said she was “incredibly close to the common woman,” not to mention Goop’s absurdly expensive holiday gift guide.

Danner, who’s currently promoting her new film I’ll See You In My Dreams, explained that while she’s not the most tech-savvy, she does know that the (negative) picture the media paints of her daughter just isn’t right or warranted, and praises her daughter for her talent, environmentalism, as a mother, and more.

She explains why:

I am so blessed that I’m old. I know how to get online. I don’t know how to Twitter, toot, tweet. I don’t know how to do any of it, and I don’t look for it, because I know so much of it is just trying to sell papers or whatever that’s called over the Internet.

I know that she’s the most extraordinary girl who can do everything. Incredible mother! She’s raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for my husband’s oral cancer foundation—things she doesn’t talk about a lot. She’s becoming a great environmentalist. I’m so proud of her. I think she’s so accomplished that people get kind of intimidated by it. Great cook, great mom, great actress.

After all, mother does know best.

In I’ll See You In My Dreams, “A widow [Danner] and former songstress discovers that life can begin anew at any age.”

This is Danner’s first role as a leading lady in film, however the Tony Award winning actress is definitely no stranger to Broadway and Off-Broadway. She’s perhaps best-known for her roles as Will’s mother in Will & Grace, and in Meet the Parents.
