WATCH: Britney Spears and Iggy Azalea Bring ‘Pretty Girls’ to the BBMAs Stage, But Was It Secretly Pre-Taped?

BBMAs: The Winner's List
Taylor Swift dominated the evening, obviously.

They’re just so pretty!

Britney Spears and Iggy Azalea took the Billboard Music Awards stage last night to perform their new single, “Pretty Girls,” for the first time. This marks one of only a handful of times Spears has performed during an awards show following her infamous(ly bad) show-opening moment at the 2007 Video Music Awards.

Last night’s performance borrowed liberally from the cheeky ’80s aesthetic that defined the music video released last week. Spears brought more energy to the stage than she has in a long while, making it a treat for fans, many of whom have come to expect low-energy and generally subpar performances from the Princess of Pop. For her part, Azalea basically just looked like Christina Aguilera circa 2000.

The word on the street — and we all know how tenuous our trust in words like that should be —  is that the performance, though it was billed as “live” during the awards, was actually pre-taped on Saturday during the “dress rehearsal.”

Such is the trickery of television, and unfortunate though that may be, it is not surprising. Just enjoy it for what it is. Unless, of course, you’re ugly.
