Demi Lovato Reveals How She Dealt With Her Struggling Body Image, Why She ‘Loves’ Kim Kardashian

While today we see a confident, stunning 22-year-old enjoying every moment of her life, Demi Lovato wasn’t always as happy as she is now.

The singer has always been vocal about her struggle with body image issues and substance abuse, making the choice to remain sober and pursue a healthier lifestyle through fitness and diet. But one thing that she’s always maintained and continues to do so: her skin.

We got the chance to sit down with Lovato to chat about her skincare line Devonne by Demi, and she opened up about her struggle with body image issues and how skincare actually helped her through those rough times.

“When I suffered from body image issues, I knew that I could always take care of my skin,” she explained. “So the things that I wasn’t in take control of, skincare, for me, was something that I knew I could take care of.”

She adds, “I throw around the phrase skincare is self care a lot, but it really got me through several years of my life where that’s really the only way I was taking care of myself.”

In fact, for those young women wondering if they need to get lip injections or plastic surgery to look as stunning as Kylie Jenner, Lovato honestly believes that a good beauty regiment can change their perspective.

“I think that anytime you’re taking care of yourself — whether it’s with washing your face or getting a massage or working out — anytime that you’re taking care of yourself you’re doing something that is helping your self esteem,” she says, adding, “I believe that the more you do for yourself, the better you’ll feel and less you’ll have to do those other things [like plastic surgery]. Like if you want to get your lips done great, go do that! But I know that for me, I can take care of my skin and feel great about that knowing that I’m doing everything I can [naturally].”

And speaking of natural beauty, when we asked the former Disney star and supporter of #MakeupFreeMondays who she considers a her beauty icon, she answered with the utmost of confidence: “I’ve never really looked at people in a natural sense. I’ve always just looked in the mirror and thought, ‘I like what I see.'”

That’s what we need out of more young women!

However, she also adds she looks to Kim Kardashian for style and makeup, but also for the way she’s used her famous platform to raise awareness around meaningful subjects. Kardashian recently produced a documentary called #RedFlag to raise awareness about mental illness — something close to Lovato’s heart and for which part of the proceeds from Devonne by Demi are donated.

“Every little bit helps. It doesn’t matter to me if they have no involvement whatsoever,” Lovato explains. “What matters to me is the fact that somebody would use their social media to raise awareness of issues like that. That’s what’s really exciting — people in pop culture, such as Kim, can really make a difference when it comes to getting the word out about something. They can make it happen.”

She adds, “It’s really exciting to hear she’s doing that. She’s got a big heart and I love her for that.”
