Naomi Watts is one of the few people not keeping up with the Kardashians.
The actress — who’s been stunning on the carpet at Cannes over the last week — opened up to InStyle Australia about her fear for the industry and society’s current obsessions: Kim Kardashian and family.
“There’s so much focus on celebrity these days,” she explains. “We’re in the Kardashian era, and it’s slightly scary.”
What exactly does that mean? The actress continues, “When you hear that there are ways to use [your celebrity status] purposefully, it makes you feel good about what you do. When it’s related to matters that you’re passionate about, it’s easy to get involved when the invitation comes.”
Essentially, Watts worries that the amount of focus on becoming a celebrity and being famous — which is really what the Kardashians aimed for at first — is outweighing the aspirations to use fame for the greater good. However, it’s important to note that she doesn’t necessarily claim the Kardashians aren’t using their own fame for a good cause.
“I was thinking the other day, we’ve all had our own commentary on the ‘Kardashians,’” Perry explained on the carpet at the Met Gala earlier this month. “But if the Kardashians hadn’t existed, there wouldn’t have been the fantastic Bruce Jenner, who is just evolving everyone right now with all of his wonderfulness. So the Kardashians, in my book, are completely valid.”
