Ireland Legalizes Gay Marriage by Popular Vote, Celebrities Celebrate on Social Media

Ireland has become the first nation in the world to legalize same-sex marriage by popular vote, and celebrities are overjoyed by the historic decision, expressing their excitement on social media.

Millions of people showed up to cast their vote yesterday (May 22, 2015), amounting to over 60% of the 3.2 million who were eligible. According to the New York Times, the vote was 62 percent in favor of legalizing same-sex marriage and 38 percent opposed in the final tally.

18 other countries have already legalized gay marriage, but Ireland is the first country to do so by popular vote.
