Instant Follow Friday: Amy Schumer Is Our Heroic Goddess of Comedy

Amy Schumer is unapologetically the controversial, heroic, unabashed feminist comedian we love and need, and for that and one hundred thousand reasons more, she is this week’s Instant Follow Friday.

Schumer doesn’t just do stand up comedy and tell funny jokes; she uses intelligent comedy to comment on the most important issues and concerns of society.

In addition to being 100% hilarious (and at times filthy funny), each week Schumer’s Comedy Central show Inside Amy Schumer brings attention to the misogyny women are faced with on a daily basis, to society’s obsession with body image, to Bill Cosby’s sexual assault allegations, and everything in between.

Whether it’s in regards to the high standards placed upon women (see her “Girl, You Don’t Need Makeup” sketch supposedly mocking One Direction’s “That’s What Makes You Beautiful,” and the idea of natural beauty) or the incredibly tricky subject of the gross reality of our pervasive rape culture (see “Football Town Nights,” which parodies a football team coach’s “no raping” policy, one that everyone finds ludicrous, and ultimately is aimed at educating people on a very serious issue), Schumer hits the nail on its head every time.

Perhaps one of her most amazing spoofs was of the 1957 film 12 Angry Men, in which twelve (yes, you guessed it) angry white men sat as a jury debating whether or not Amy Schumer was “hot enough for basic television.”

It takes one holdout juror and the entire episode for the men to (albeit unwillingly) consider that even though she doesn’t look like Megan Fox or Kate Upton, she is actually, in one situation or another, indeed hot enough to be on TV, bringing to light the kind of judgement automatically brought against women in the entertainment industry just for the reason that they’re women.

Oh, and let’s not forget that time she appeared on The Bachelorette, and helped the suitors with their stand-up comedy. Because her appearance went over so well, the show asked her to become the next bachelorette and this was her response:

Your next bachelorette

In short, she’s laugh out loud funny, and tackles sexism in a productive and insightful manner at the same time. Slay.

You go, Amy Schumer.

Check out the best of her Instagram in the gallery above, which features plenty of cute sister bonding pics, gallivanting with other funny people and celebs alike, and other shenanigans from her day-to-day (like that time she and Amber Rose were BFF’s).
