You’ll Never Believe Who Was Almost Cast as Cher in ‘Clueless’
Nearly 20 years after it was released in theaters, Clueless is considered one of the most iconic movies of the 90s. That being said, it’s hard to envision anyone other than Alicia Silverstone playing Cher Horowitz.
“I had my heart set on Alicia. [But] Fox… wanted me to explore all the [options],” Heckerling explains. “I saw Alicia Witt, the redheaded [actress]. And who else? Tiffani Thiessen. The one that — she was in that show [Felicity] and she cut her hair and everybody was mad? Keri Russell, yes.”
The director continues, “Then they go, ‘You’ve got to see the girl in [Flesh and Bone].’ I never got to see her. I guess she was off on other things. That turned out to be Gwyneth Paltrow.”
The film’s casting director Carrie Frazier also recalls an agent pitching the part for Angelina Jolie.
“[She] was too knowing for what was needed for ‘Clueless,'” Frazier explains. “Angelina never came in [to audition] for the project. I was just looking at her tape. I remember an agent pitching her, and I’m going, ‘No, no, no, this is exactly the opposite of what I need for this.'”
While Witherspoon may have had a better shot at playing the role over Paltrow and Jolie, Heckerling nevertheless had already made up her mind.
“I saw some movie where [Reese] had a Southern accent,” the filmmaker said. “Maybe it was on TV, a movie of the week. But I did see some scenes of hers and went: ‘Wow. She’s amazing.’ But Alicia is Cher.”
