Almost 20 years since Clueless first hit theaters, the flick’s director, Amy Heckerling, has confirmed that a musical version of the high school comedy is currently in the works.

“I’ve written the, what they call the book and it’s a jukebox musical,” she tells Entertainment Tonight. (For those not in the know, a “jukebox musical” means that the production will use previously released popular songs as its main score.)

The filmmaker also says Kristin Hanggi of Rock of Ages fame will be taking on the director role while Dodger Theatricals, the company behind Broadway adaptations like Matilda the Musical and Footloose, is producing the stage show.

As for cast? Heckerling admits it’ll be hard finding someone to fill the shoes of Alicia Silverstone, Paul Rudd, and the late Brittany Murphy.

“Well casting — that’s like going to be like the main problem,” she says.

However, it might be a while before fans can purchase ticket. According to Heckerling, the work in developing a musical is taking her much longer than she had thought.

“Everything goes so slowly,” she tells Variety. “I thought movies took a long time.”
