Jake Gyllenhaal Embraces His Inner Nerd in ‘Little Shop of Horrors’

Jake Gyllenhaal made his professional musical theater debut in Little Shop of Horrors last night (Jul. 01, 2015) in New York City.

Gyllenhaal plays Seymour in the New York City Center’s Encores! Off-Center production opposite Ellen Greene, who is the original actress who originated the role of Audrey on and off screen.

The 34-year-old actor channeled his inner nebbish to play Seymour, an inept florist who creates a plant which thirsts for human blood, in a two-night-only production of the show. He not only looked the part of a meek, orphaned flower shop employee, he embraced it.

While keeping his signature beard, Gyllenhaal donned a white-and-burgundy checked shirt, wide-rimmed glasses and ill-fitting khakis to create the unassuming, luckless Seymour style.

Gyllenhaal is getting mostly positive reviews. USA Today says:

The actor, who has given intuitive and nuanced performances in New York productions of the Nick Payne plays Constellations and If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet, brought a winningly subdued poignance and goofiness to his spoken and sung lines.

You’ll be able to see Jake Gyllenhaal back on the big screen in Southpaw on July 23, 2015.
