Celebrities React to Caitlyn Jenner’s ESPY Awards Speech, ‘Friday Night Lights’ Creator Shares Hateful Meme

Caitlyn Jenner received the Arthur Ashe Courage Award on Wednesday night at the 2015 ESPY Awards.

Fellow Olympian Abby Wambach of the U.S. Women’s soccer team presented the former decathlon with her award after a riveting video introduction that was narrated by Jon Hamm. Jenner, who wore a floor-length Versace gown, focused her speech on the issues of transphobia, specifically as they appear in athletic and youth communities.

She explained that her spotlight at the awards show expands beyond her individual presence, shining a light on universal acceptance.

“It’s not just about me, it’s about all of us accepting one another. We’re all different. That’s not a bad thing. That’s a good thing. And while it may not easy to get past the things you [do not] understand, I want to prove that it is absolutely possible if we only do it together.”

Jenner was joined by her children Kendall, Kylie, Brody, Brandon, Burt, and Casey Jenneras well as Kim, Kourtney, and Khloé Kardashian.

Kylie commented on her emotional experience via Twitter:

However, it was Jenner’s mother Esther who sat front and center in the audience of the Microsoft Theater in vocal support of her child’s controversial decision to introduce the public to her latent female identity. She stated in her video confessional,

“When she was receiving that [1976 Olympic medal], I never thought I could ever be more proud, but I was wrong. I am now even more proud.”

Laverne Cox, also a transgender community activist, expressed gratitude for her mention in Jenner’s speech.

Alternatively, Friday Night Lights creator Peter Berg shared this insulting meme of Jenner on his Instagram account that enraged his show’s fans.

One Man traded 2 legs for the freedom of the other to trade 2 balls for 2 boobs. Guess which Man made the cover of Vanity Fair, was praised for his courage by President Obama and is to be honored with the “Arthur Ashe Courage Award” by ESPN?”
