‘Freeheld’ Trailer: Julianne Moore and Ellen Page Fight for Gay Rights
Gay marriage may be legal in the United States now, but everything wasn’t so fine and dandy just a few years ago.
Julianne Moore and Ellen Page’s upcoming movie, Freeheld, follows emotional love story between two women and their fight for equality. Based on true events, the film centers around New Jersey police officer Laurel Hester (Moore) and her domestic partner of five years, Stacie Andree (Page).
When Laurel is diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in 2005 and given only one year to live, she learns that she cannot pass on her pension to Stacie as they’re in a same-sex relationship. Together, the two stand up and challenge the Ocean County, New Jersey Board of Chosen Freeholders to allow same-sex couples to have the same rights as heterosexual couples so that — like Laurel’s colleagues — her partner is allowed to receive her hard-earned benefits after she dies.
