Liam Payne: I Was ‘Shocked’ by Louis Tomlinson’s Baby Bombshell
He also revealed that, like us, he’s really looking forward to Zayn Malik’s solo material and supports his career choices.
During an interview with UK’s Magic Radio, Payne explained that Tomlinson is taking the news of his and Briana Jungwirth’s baby “very seriously.”
“Well, obviously I was a bit shocked, but he’s taken super well to it,” Payne admitted. “He’s very excited with what’s going on with him at the moment, and I feel that stuff like that happens sometimes.”
Notably, Payne called Jungwirth a “lovely girl.” Meanwhile, Tomlinson has yet to publicly comment on his baby mama.
And now that Malik’s landed his own record deal with RCA last week (and, we assume, officially rid himself of Naughty Boy), he’s officially embarking on a new musical journey alone since leaving One Direction back in March.
Payne commented that he and the band always knew Malik’s “heart wasn’t in it.”
“I haven’t spoken to him recently and he’s off doing his own thing and taking his time,” he said. “It is a difficult thing to leave the band, but his heart wasn’t in it. You have to go with your heart and say, ‘I can’t do this anymore’ and ‘There is something out there that I do want to do that is different,’ and that’s fine.”
That being said, he is “dead excited to hear some of [Malik’s] stuff,” explaining, “I did a lot of work with him in the studio when he was in the band. We used to stay up late and do rap stuff, which is quite interesting.”
Payne additionally told the UK’s Radio 1 that “One Direction was never Zayn’s sort of music so he kind of always wanted to find something else. If your heart’s not into something, you can’t just carry on doing it because of fame and stuff. You have to go and do what you want to do.”
Luckily, they’re all still supportive of one another, and called Malik’s record deal “cool for him.”
“There’s too much history for there not to be love,” he added. “But it’s nice that we’ve banded together, and I feel like we’re stronger than ever now actually, which is strange but it’s worked out really nicely for everybody.”
As for his own interests, Payne said that he loves songwriting but wouldn’t reveal whether or not he’d ever leave the band.
“I’m more interested in the writing side of things, if I’m honest. I like writing songs for different artists and crafting a song is a really beautiful thing to do. I sit down and do it with my girlfriend [Sophia Smith] sometimes and with a couple of lads that I know. I much prefer doing that sort of thing. I love being in the band. I don’t know if I could do it by myself now; it’s all too comfortable.”
One Direction’s first single sans-Malik, “Drag Me Down,” surprise-dropped on Friday (July 31, 2015), and is already breaking some crazy records. It broke Spotify’s record for the most-streamed song in one day (it was played 4.75 million times globally on Friday, the day it was released, out-streaming Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again,” which previously held the record of 4.26 million plays on April 17).
Additionally, “Drag Me Down” became the first song to reach #1 on Spotify’s Global Chart on the first day of its release (Calvin Harris’ “Blame” previously held the record). Finally, the song topped the charts in 15 different countries, including the US, Canada, Italy, Brazil, and Peru.
1D performed it for the first time live during a concert in Indianapolis on Friday. “Drag Me Down” is the first single off the band’s upcoming fifth album.
Malik showed his support for the band and praised the track on Twitter, writing: “Proud of my boys the new single is sick. Big love. :) x”
