David Oyelowo Is Your New James Bond (Kind Of)

Brad Pitt's Lesson in Oyelowo
Here's how to pronounce David Oyelowo's last name.

David Oyelowo’s next role can be enjoyed from the comfort of your bed (or commute, or jog).

The 39-year-old actor has just been hired to play James Bond in the upcoming audiobook version of Trigger Mortis, an official 007 book written by Anthony Horowitz and commissioned by the Ian Fleming estate.

Oyelowo, who most recently won hearts (and made us cry at the Oscars) with last year’s Selma, will also voice other characters in the 1950s-set novel.

“I am officially the only person on planet Earth who can legitimately say: ‘I am the new James Bond’ – even saying that name is the cinematic equivalent of doing the ‘to be or not to be’ speech,” Oyelowo said in a statement Thursday. [via The Guardian]

Speaking of Shakespeare, Oyelowo was the first black actor to play an English king in any major Shakespeare production when he portrayed King Henry VI with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2001. With Bond, Oyelowo is now the first black actor to play the martini-loving spy, on or off the big screen.

According to Golden Globe nominated star, his Bond will be “a man who is very self-assured” — but not perfect.

Sounds great, Mr. Oyelowo.

Trigger Mortis arrives Sept. 8.

Meanwhile, the movie version of James Bond post-Daniel Craig is still up for grabs…
