Jessica Alba Is Tired of People Comparing Her to Gwyneth Paltrow
Welcome back to our look at the Celebrity Lifestyle Blogosphere.
Featured in the September issue of Allure (and the subject of a gorgeous cover shoot), the 34-year-old actress opened up about her distaste for being stereotyped as a female businesswoman and compared to the Queen of lifestyle gurus herself, Gwyneth Paltrow.
She told the magazine with an air of irritation,
What I think is unfair is to lump actresses together. People aren’t lumping Justin Timberlake and Ashton Kutcher together. They do other businesses. I think it’s expected that when you get success in one area, you’re supposed to evolve and try to do something else—especially in business, and especially if you’re a man.
And we totally agree. Kutcher is a venture capitalist and investor in several successful enterprises and restaurants (like Airbnb, Skype, and Foursquare) while Timberlake owns a $35 million stake in Myspace and also has other ventures like restaurants. But Alba makes a fair assessment that as men, they’re not “lumped” together as entertainers who are also businessmen just for the fact that they’re successful in more than one professional interest, unlike how female actors are “lumped” together that way more often than not.
Alba, who now ranks as one of the wealthiest women in America with an estimated net worth of $340 million due to the success of her company, also spoke to Allure about her acting career:
I never wanted to play into a stereotype, where it’s like, ‘Oh, you’re just the girl who gets saved by the guy,’ and she doesn’t know how to make decisions, and she gets overwhelmed with all this stuff happening around her.
Women are freaking resilient.
…I wish I found my voice as a person earlier, though, because I felt like I had to just shut up and do what they wanted me to, even though it was against how I really felt.
Perhaps she has a future in directing, Allure insinuates. And when her hot hubby Cash Warren came up, Alba gushed:
Gosh, it wouldn’t really be possible without him. He helped me put together my initial business plan. He was always my biggest cheerleader but never gave me unrealistic expectations and never criticized me so much where I felt defeated. Having someone who genuinely has your back, no matter what, there’s nothing like that…. It’s a real unconditional love…. The partner that you choose to go through life with you, that’s your chosen family.
As for Celebuzz, our interest in featuring our favorite celeb bloggers and entrepreneurs is to pay tribute to their individual beauty, travel, food, lifestyle, fashion, and health tidbits (and everything in between) on a bi-monthly basis. We want to recognize what they do for their respective lifestyle bloggy communities (be it non-toxic beauty products or mindfulness discovery).
Paltrow and goop are in a different realm of the blogosphere than Reese Witherspoon and Draper James, for example, and that is what makes this tiny corner of the Internet amazing. These various celeb lifestyle blogs should be celebrated because everyone has something to offer. By pointing out unique facets of Preserve (à la Blake Lively), and interesting advice columns on goop or The Haute Mess (à la Ashley Tisdale), for example, it’s really in honor of how digestible, unique and smart these blogs (and business women) are. It also provides a few laughs now and then (ahem, goop will never live down vagina steaming).
