WATCH: Caitlyn Jenner Talks Gay Marriage and Candis Cayne Dating Rumors on ‘Ellen’
Airing Tuesday during Ellen Degeneres’ Season 13 premiere week, the former Olympian opened up about taking hormones in the ’80s, her reality TV show I Am Cait, her marriage to Kris Jenner, being a Republican, and much more in an inspiring interview about living life as your authentic self.
Jenner admitted to Degeneres that, as a Republican, she wasn’t on board with same-sex marriage at first.
I have to admit that I remember 15 years ago, 20 years ago whenever it was the whole gay marriage issue came up at first, I was not for it. I mean I thought am a traditionalist I mean I’m older than most people in the audience. I mean I like tradition and it’s always been between a man and a woman and I’m thinking I don’t quite get it. But as time goes on like a lot of people on this issue I’ve really changed thinking here to I don’t ever want to stand in front of anybody’s happiness. That’s not my job. Ok. If that word marriage is really, really that important to you I can go with it.
Her comments prompted Degeneres to wonder, “Its funny cause you’re still kind of a little not on board with it.”
But Jenner assured, “No I’m on board. It’s going to be pretty much the law of the land. So I still feel like yeah, I’m okay with it. I don’t want to stand in front of somebody’s happiness…”
Jenner, former known as Bruce, who is thrice divorced and came out as a woman back in April, also opened up about her dating life. She confessed that even though she hasn’t yet started dating, it doesn’t mean she doesn’t want to share her life with a partner. As for whether or not that partner would be a man or a woman, Jenner didn’t divulge.
[Dating] is, and we deal with it in our show, a tremendous issue in the trans community. It’s a very big issue. So many today transition at a very young age and the whole dating thing comes in. Everybody wants to have a partner everybody would love to have a family and for trans people sometimes that can be extraordinarily difficult to do. And so it is an issue that’s big in the community.
For me I’m at such a different place in life. I already have too many children. Just kidding. Just kidding. I have 10 children. I’ve got my eighth grand child in the oven with Kimberly. I have all these wonderful kids. I’ve kind of passed that stage in my life, but yes would I like to find a partner in life to share my life with. Yeah! I’m sure I will at some point. Right now I’m just very busy doing a lot of things and kind of just getting used to where I’m at and who I’m at. As time goes on I’ll deal with that subject.
Degeneres then asked, “Will it be Candice? Y’all really hit it off…” referring to Candis Cayne, Jenner’s rumored love interest.
She laughed it off, adding “Actually Candice is back stage, but that’s a whole other deal.” See what else Caitlyn had to say about Candis in the video above.
In the next video, Degeneres praises Jenner’s show I Am Cait for being educational, and Jenner opens up about wanting to transition back in the ’80s before she’d turned 40-years-old. She explains that she couldn’t go through with it, and shortly after met now ex-wife Kris Jenner with whom she raised a family for the next twenty years. Additionally, Degeneres told Jenner how “gutsy” it was that she would wear a “bra and pantyhose” underneath her suit back when she used to travel across the country doing motivational speeches, and sometimes cross-dress in public.
Watch Jenner discuss being stealthy, and talk about what she’s learned in the last couple of months in the video below:
Degeneres asked Jenner if she missed Bruce, and she replied, “Absolutely, no. Because as a woman I can do all this fun stuff anyway. I can still play golf. I can still go race cars.” Ellen agrees, and comments, “I don’t think that gender has anything to do with hobbies.”
The talk show host even went so far as to ask if she played golf from the men’s tee or the women’s tee (which is something she debated over on her show with friend Ronda Kamihara while applying for a golf course membership under her former name “Bruce”). Watch what she had to say about telling her family and playing golf in the video below:
Lastly, Degeneres and Jenner have a special surprise for Blossom Brown, the aspiring nurse who appeared on Jenner’s show and shared her story about having a difficult time getting into nursing school because she was transgender.
In a video that’ll warm your heart, Ellen announces that she wants to help Blossom get into any nursing school, and gifts her with a $20,000 gift from Shutterfly.
Jenner’s next TV appearance will be on NBC in a two-part interview with Matt Lauer, airing Sept. 8 and Sept. 9. The pair play golf together, discuss Jenner’s transition, her fatal February car crash, and much more.
I Am Cait airs Sundays at 8 p.m. on E!.
