Johnny Depp Jokes About the Fate of His Dogs Ahead of ‘Black Mass’ Premiere at Venice Film Festival
Today in weird news…
During the Black Mass press conference alongside co-stars Dakota Johnson, Joel Edgerton and director Scott Cooper, Depp said sullenly, “I killed my dogs and ate them under direct orders from some kind of, I don’t know, sweaty, big-gutted man from Australia.”
Earlier this year, Depp’s wife Amber Heard took the fall for smuggling their two Yorkshire terriers Down Under (where Depp was filming Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales). The couple violated Australia’s strict quarantine laws by bringing in Boo and Pistol, and the contraband pups were subsequently ordered out of the country by Minister for Agriculture, Barnaby Joyce.
Apparently Joyce is the “sweaty big-gutted man” Depp is referring to.
In Black Mass, Depp portrays the infamous Irish-American mobster James ‘Whitey’ Bulger. Based after the 2001 novel Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob by Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill, Black Mass is the true story of Bulger, who is a prominent leader of organized crime in South Boston and the brother of Massachusetts State Senator William “Billy” Bulger. Focusing on the late ’70s and early ’80s, Bulger becomes a FBI informant for 30 years, engaging in the takedown of a Mafia family invading his turf while leading the Irish-American Winter Hill Gang.
On preparing for the role, Depp commented, “I found the evil in myself a long time ago. I accepted it; we are old friends,” adding:
With a character like James Bulger, you have to approach him as a human. No one wakes up in the morning and says, as they are brushing their teeth, I am going to do something evil today. He was a businessman – in his business, the violence was just part of his job, let’s say. It was also the language of the people he associated with and opposed. They all understood the same language.
Later on, Depp coupled up with Heard, his wife of almost 7 months, for the premiere of Black Mass along with Johnson, Edgerton, and Cooper on the red carpet.
Also in attendance at the film’s premiere were beautiful couple Joshua Jackson and Diane Kruger, and Elizabeth Banks. Banks and Kruger are both members of the competition jury this year, in addition to Alfonso Cuarón (also president of the jury) and several other directors.
The premiere comes just as news broke that Sienna Miller’s character was cut from the movie. Cooper explained that while Miller was “fantastic” in her role as Bulger’s real-life girlfriend Catherine Greig, “it came down to narrative choices.”
