‘Carol’ Trailer: Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara Fall Madly in Love

Cate's Confession
Cate Blanchett opens up about her past relationships with men and women.

“We gave each other the most breathtaking of gifts.”

With the best time of the year fast approaching, studios are rolling out trailer after trailer so talented people like Cate Blanchett can get another major award or two. The latest trailer comes from The Weinstein Company, which released a new trailer for Todd Haynes’ romantic drama Carol, starring Blanchett as the title character.

Rooney Mara plays Therese, a young shop clerk who falls for Carol, who’s married to a man (Kyle Chandler) in New York City during the 1950s. The film is of course based on Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Price of Salt, published in 1952.

“I first read it years ago, when I was filming my small part in a different Highsmith film, The Talented Mr. Ripley,” Blanchett told Entertainment Weekly earlier this year. “It was revelatory. You can’t forget [Highsmith] is the goddess of crime fiction, but in this instance it’s the desire which is criminal.”

Carol has been a major awards season contender since making a splash at the Cannes Film Festival in May. Mara tied with French actress Emmanuelle Bercot for the Best Actress prize.

Carol, which also stars Sarah Paulson and Carrie Brownstein, will receive a limited release in the U.S. on Nov. 20. Watch the latest trailer, above.
