LISTEN: Miley Cyrus Debuts ‘Hands of Love’ from the ‘Freeheld’ Soundtrack

Miley Cyrus is taking a break from mourning the loss of her Dead Petz to offer her voice to the Freeheld soundtrack.

The 2015 MTV VMAs host teamed up with songwriter Linda Perry to produce “Hands of Love”, a new track for the upcoming film about Stacie Andree and Laurel Hestera true-life lesbian couple who fought for equal same-sex benefit rights.

Perry, a former member of the 90’s band 4 Non Blondes and songwriter for Pink and Christina Aguilera, told TIME that she was so moved by the film that she began writing “Hands of Love” in the car immediately following the screening.

“I’ve never had this happen before,” Perry described to TIME. “The arrangement is there, the lyrics are showing up, I can’t get to a piano, there’s no instruments, there’s no nothing—it’s all just floating around inside my head.”

Ellen Page, the film’s star alongside Julianne Moore, felt that Cyrus was the perfect match to embody the essence of Freeheld. “She has a really raw, unique, awesome, beautiful voice, and Miley’s doing a lot of incredible things for the LGBTQ community,” Page said. “I just thought it was going to be a perfect fit.”

Cyrus, meanwhile, expressed her affection for the piece as only she could. “I think Ellen Page is super amazing and brave. And Julianne Moore,” she continued. “I told her drunkenly one night at an afterparty—I like film, but I’ve never been a fan of somebody in film or had favorite movies, but all my favorite movies that I do have, she is in.”

“She picks amazing roles.”
