Emily Blunt and John Krasinski just pulled three amazing pranks on Jimmy Kimmel...

Emily Blunt is learning the hard way that Twitter can’t just laugh at something and move on.

During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the actress made a joke about becoming an American citizen that really didn’t go over well with the internet.

“I became an American citizen recently, and that night, we watched the Republican debate and I thought, ‘This was a terrible mistake. What have I done?’”

She made the seemingly harmless comment in jest, but we all know when the internet doesn’t like something, it lets you know.

Soon, Emily had tweets after tweets coming her way, accusing her of not wanting her citizenship and of offending these great United States.

On Thursday (Sept. 17, 2015) Emily decided to clear the air while appearing on Today.

“It was so not the intention to hurt anybody or cause any offense, so I really apologize to those that I caused offense,” she said. “It was just an offhand joke. I think I’ll probably leave the political jokes to late night or something.”

Emily added becoming a citizen is really meaningful to her, since her two favorite people—  her husband John Krasinski, and her daughter Hazel— are also American citizens.

Let’s just watch the trailer for Sicario and forget about Emily’s little blunder.
