Emmys 2015: Who We Think Will Win vs. Who We Want to See Win

The 2015 Emmy Awards Nominations
See what's up for a statuette on Sunday.

Many television programs and actors will, on Sunday, take home an Emmy statuette. Many more will not. Which ones will win? Which ones should win? Let’s talk about that.

I asked the staff of Celebuzz to send me their predictions for the major Emmy categories. Additionally, I had them tell me who or what they want to win. (Because sometimes what we want is not what we get.) It turned out to be a good exercise in that I learned many of my coworkers agree with me on a lot of things which means I can start showing them more respect as human beings.

Anyway, without further delay, let’s dig into Celebuzz’s Emmys predictions and wish lists:

Outstanding Drama

What Matt Thinks Will Win

Mad Men. The series wrapped up its highly-acclaimed seven-year run with a handful of gorgeous, subtle, and defiant episodes that brought satisfying resolution to the characters we became so invested in.

What Matt Thinks Should Win

Mad Men See above. It deserves to go out on top.

What Kaitlyn Thinks Will Win

Mad Men. The show is legendary.

What Kaitlyn Thinks Should Win

Mad Men. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, Mad Men’s series finale was fantastic. Beyond that, Mad Men effectively and beautifully transported viewers into its world in ways that most shows only dream of doing.

What Peggy Thinks Will Win

Mad Men, because if not now, when?

What Peggy Thinks Should Win

Mad Men. The show already has four of these awards, but merely has been hanging out in the nominated room since 2011. It’s time.

What Michael Thinks Will Win

Mad Men – The Emmy voters will forget about the eh, first half of the final season and will reward the show for it’s top notch final half of the season.

What Michael Thinks Should Win

Better Call Saul. This was a brilliant first season. Perfect in every way.

What Mia Thinks Will Win

Game of Thrones will probably take it because it’s the hottest thing among my nerd friends.

What Mia Thinks Should Win

Mad Men, because I’m still crying that it’s over and in denial that something so great had ever existed.

What Gabi Thinks Will Win

Mad Men. With Breaking Bad finally out of the picture, this award is Mad Men’s to lose.

What Gabi Thinks Should Win

Mad Men. Voters will be (rightly) swayed to give the AMC series their votes as nod to the show’s seven great season. Winning this Emmy is the perfect send-off.

Outstanding Comedy

What Matt Thinks Will Win

The Emmys seem incapable of not rewarding Modern Family for being mediocre (at best), and somehow I doubt that will change this year.

What Matt Thinks Should Win

The Unbreakable Kimmy SchmidtVeepand Silicon Valley all brought incredible bouts of laughter into my life, but Parks and Recreation never got the Emmy love it so richly deserved. This is its last chance, and I would love nothing more than to see it rewarded for seven years of inspired (and inspiring) comedy.

What Kaitlyn Thinks Will Win

Veep. It’s got to be the funniest show out there, perhaps aside from Broad City (which was not nominated). I’ll usually watch the episodes a second time just for the sake of being able to re-laugh at the jokes. Veep has also never won Best Comedy.

What Kaitlyn Thinks Should Win

Transparent. It’s powerful, original, and it’s a show about the tenderness of the heart. A show of this caliber is rare.

What Peggy Thinks Will Win

Modern Family, because what would the Emmys be without the show winning this category for the 6th time in a row?

What Peggy Thinks Should Win

The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. It’s time Tina Fey got recognized for all those times Modern Family stole the award from 30 Rock.

What Michael Thinks Will Win

Modern Family – The Emmy voters love Modern Family, so why not have win number six in a row and beat Frasier’s record.

What Michael Thinks Should Win

Transparent – Jeffrey Tambor gave an amazing performance and the writing was superb.

What Mia Thinks Will Win

Veep because anything that Julia-Louis Dreyfus touches is awards show gold.

What Mia Thinks Should Win

The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt because Tina Fey can do nothing wrong. DO YOU HEAR ME? NOTHING.

What Gabi Thinks Will Win

Modern Family. Because it’s the Emmys and nothing ever really changes.

What Gabi Thinks Should Win

Parks and Recreation. How is it possible that Parks has never won a single primetime Emmy during its seven-season run? Like with Mad Men, voters will give this show its swan song Emmy and right this egregious wrong, no?

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama

Who Matt Thinks Will Win

Jon Hamm, man. Everyone realizes he’s due this award. He created an iconic character and has never been justly rewarded for doing so; everyone appears to be on the same page about rectifying that.

Who Matt Thinks Should Win

Jon Hamm because please see above.

Who Kaitlyn Thinks Will Win

Jon Hamm, Mad Men. Please, let’s just give Jon Hamm his Emmy already. He deserves it.

Who Kaitlyn Thinks Should Win

Jon Hamm, Mad Men.

Who Peggy Thinks Will Win

Jon Hamm. Mad Men is about a lot of things but as the last half of Season 7 reminded us, the show has been about Don Draper all along. Hamm’s performance delivered that statement beautifully in the show’s final seven episodes.

Who Peggy Thinks Should Win

Jon Hamm. Last season. Last nomination playing Don Draper. Basically last chance, unless he gets lucky and scores another role like Don Draper.

Who Michael Thinks Will Win

Jon Hamm, Mad Men. The man is due his Emmy.

Who Michael Thinks Should Win

Jon Hamm, Mad Men. Never having won an Emmy for his work on Mad Men, Jon Hamm’s work during the final season is definitely deserving of one.

Who Mia Thinks Will Win

Jon Hamm will still win because even the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences wants to give him something shiny to play with to forget his break-up with Jennifer Westfeldt.

Who Mia Thinks Should Win

Jon Hamm for Mad Men because his pukey shirt deserves a final resting place in television history.

Who Gabi Thinks Will Win

Jon Hamm. I think this will be the year when people realize that we should stop with this cruel joke and reward Hamm for seven seasons of amazing acting.

Who Gabi Thinks Should Win

Jon Hamm. Seriously, it’s like he’s becoming the Peter O’Toole of the Emmys. He’s given his all — both on Mad Men and as a guest star on 30 Rock — and has yet to walk away with a single Emmy. Can someone just give him that shiny figurine and call it a day?

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama

Who Matt Thinks Will Win

The momentum seems to indicate Taraji P. Henson.

Who Matt Thinks Should Win

I would be happy seeing either Tatiana Maslany — who works so hard as so many different characters on Orphan Black — or Elisabeth Moss take this, but ultimately my vote goes to Moss. Her subtle, poignant work for seven years on Mad Men deserves to be rewarded. Let’s give it to Maslany next year.

Who Kaitlyn Thinks Will Win

Taraji P. Henson, Empire. I really only watched Empire for a hot second because of Cookie Lyon. She stole the show, so to speak.

Who Kaitlyn Thinks Should Win

Tatiana Maslany, Orphan Black. No big deal, but she plays multiple characters on Orphan Black. Maslany is also the underdog (after being snubbed two years in a row, she was finally nominated this year), and I like underdogs. All the leading ladies nominated in this category are flawless, by the way.

Who Peggy Thinks Will Win

Taraji P. Henson, because Cookie will be mad if this doesn’t happen.

Who Peggy Thinks Should Win

Between Tatiana Maslany’s well deserved nomination and Elisabeth Moss’ final Mad Men-related nomination, I’d be happy with either actress winning this award. It would be first for either.

Who Michael Thinks Will Win

Taraji P. Henson, Empire. This is the category with the tightest race. Taraji had the breakout performance of the year, so that could very well push her to a win.

Who Michael Thinks Should Win

Tatiana Maslany, Orphan Black. You try playing ten plus clones with different personalities on one show. She’s simply brilliant.

Who Mia Thinks Will Win

Taraji P. Henson because she has the entire world wrapped around Cookie’s finger.

Who Mia Thinks Should Win

Watching Elisabeth Moss grow from Peggy Olson with short bangs to Peggy Olson with a hair flip is the closest thing that I will experience to motherhood within the near future, so she deserves the award for Mad Men.

Who Gabi Thinks Will Win

Elisabeth Moss. IT’S MAD MEN’S LAST YEAR, OKAY?!

Who Gabi Thinks Should Win

Tatiana Maslany. It’s hard to play 10 different characters on one TV show convincingly, and yet Maslany does it so effortlessly on Orphan Black. And no, I’m not just being bias because she’s Canadian.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy

Who Matt Thinks Will Win

Jeffery Tambor. He’s had this locked up since the Golden Globes.

Who Matt Thinks Should Win

Though I struggle to define Tambor’s performance as “comedy” (the show itself felt more like a drama to me), this is the category he’s nominated in, and he did turn in one of the most subtle, empowering performances of the year. So: Tambor.

Who Kaitlyn Thinks Will Win

Jeffrey Tambor, Transparent. Tambor is incredible. His portrayal of Maura as she transitions, not to mention the familial dysfunctions and dynamics on the show, is so sincerely human and powerful.

Who Kaitlyn Thinks Should Win

Jeffrey Tambor, Transparent.

Who Peggy Thinks Will Win

Jeffrey Tambor, Transparent. Without anyone from The Big Bang Theory in the running, Tambor should easily take this home.

Who Peggy Thinks Should Win

Jeffrey Tambor, Transparent. This should be the sweet cherry on top of Tambor’s epic year playing Maura Pfefferman, a role that earned him the Golden Globe back in January.

Who Michael Thinks Will Win

Jeffrey Tambor, Transparent. While the show probably will not win, Jeffrey seems like shoo-in for this one.

Who Michael Thinks Should Win

Jeffrey Tambor, Transparent. His flawless performance is what a winning Emmy performance is made of.

Who Mia Thinks Will Win

Don Cheadle, possibly. But I still have high hopes for Tambor.

Who Mia Thinks Should Win

Jeffrey Tambor because I sometimes like to imagine that Transparent is actually a spin-off series of Arrested Development wherein George Bluth runs away in Lucille 2’s red wig and reconciles with his latent identity.

Who Gabi Thinks Will Win

Jeffrey Tambor. Because Globes.

Who Gabi Thinks Should Win

Jeffrey Tambor. Tambor already stole the show during the 2015 Golden Globes for his moving portrayal of a transgender father-turned-mother of three on Transparent. It only seems right for him to take it at the Emmys as well.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy

Who Matt Thinks Will Win

Amy Poehler. I think people are sick of uttering this ridiculous sentence: “Can you believe Amy Poehler has never won an Emmy???” Bonus points: she deserves it.

Who Matt Thinks Should Win

Poehler or Lisa Kudrow. Julia Louis-Dreyfus has been thoroughly rewarded for Veep already, and though I find Amy Schumer hilarious, I don’t think her performances matched those of Poehler’s in Parks and Recreation or Kudrow’s in The Comeback.

Who Kaitlyn Thinks Will Win

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep. This would be her fourth win, but no less undeserved.

Who Kaitlyn Thinks Should Win

Lisa Kudrow, The Comeback. Oh Valerie. After a 9-year hiatus, the cult-hit about a fictional reality show made its awkward return last year. Life imitating art imitating life and so on, Kudrow makes Valerie believable, makes us likewise believe in her, and thus I can’t help but root for her at the Emmy’s.

Who Peggy Thinks Will Win

Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Maybe I’ve been watching too much Veep AND Seinfeld reruns (now streaming on Hulu). Or, maybe she’s just that unstoppable.

Who Peggy Thinks Should Win

Amy Schumer. It’s the year of Amy Schumer. With Inside Amy Schumer’s third season in the books and Trainwreck a moderate success, plus that HBO comedy special, an Emmy win would be pretty nice.

Who Michael Thinks Will Win

Amy Schumer, Inside Amy Schumer. She’s hot, hot, hot right now, plus the show is pretty damn funny.

Who Michael Thinks Should Win

Lisa Kudrow, The Comback. Kudrow gave a fearless performance this season, and made “uncomfortable” effortlessly funny.

Who Mia Thinks Will Win

Julia Louis-Dreyfus- See ‘Best Comedy’ category for rationale, but I hope that an onstage fisticuffs emerges from the two Amy’s during her acceptance speech.

Who Mia Thinks Should Win

I’d give this one to Poehler because Parks and Recreation has been my livelihood for quite some time, but Schumer will grab it next year because double the Amy’s, double the fun.

Who Gabi Thinks Will Win

Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The Emmys have a habit of awarding the same people, so the odds are against anyone BUT Dreyfus. (Not that JLD isn’t a hoot on Veep.)

Who Gabi Thinks Should Win

Amy Poehler. Oh, Leslie Knope. You beautiful, poetic, majestic tropical fish. You deserve everything.

Amy-Poehler-Parks-Rec

Those are our thoughts. And what are yours? Also, please tune in to the Emmys on Sunday to find out which one of us was the most right.
