Instant Follow Friday: Goddess Kerry Washington and Her ‘Scandal’ Family

Gladiators, Scandal season 5 begins next Thursday (Sept 24).

You know what that means: whatever it is that’s about to go down is going to be handled. End of conversation.

Kerry Washington stars as the formidable and flawless Washington D.C. fixer Olivia Pope. In other words, she literally has the best job in Hollywood. In celebration of her and her alter-ego, Washington is this week’s Instant Follow Friday.

When Pope isn’t resolving political scandals and keeping secrets of her own, she’s rolling around in bed with President Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn). And Season 5 heats up, with Fitz serving FLOTUS Mellie with divorce papers in the trailer.

Wearing her white hat and immaculate, carefully fitted ensembles, Olivia Pope is something of an enigma. Women IRL aspire want to be her, dress like her, speak eloquently like her; but Washington herself even revealed that she’s baffled that people consider her alter-ego their role model.

She makes a fair point, telling the Television Critics Association back in early August:

I’ve always thought it was really misguided when women tell me that Olivia is their role model. Because she’s having an affair with a married man who is president of the United States. And a murderer. And they stole an election together. Well, she stole it for him.

However, she doesn’t find Pope all that bad. She added, “she’s an entrepreneur, she’s very smart, she has an amazing closet, and those are all things that I think are worthy of admiration. But she is nobody’s role model.

In other words, Olivia Pope is complicated, and definitely a messy person to be involved with. But for her Gladiators (and us, her television audience needed a juicy reprieve from our day-to-day), she’s just what they need.

That all aside, Washington’s portrayal of Pope is riveting, dynamically tackling important social issues (i.e. Season 4’s Ferguson-inspired episode) while also poking fun at D.C.’s PR nightmares (i.e. Season 4’s sexcapade tell-all book, guest starring Lena Dunham as author “Kinky Sue”). One could say Washington is a Gladiator of sorts herself, as a big activist for LGBT rights (she received the GLAAD Vanguard Award in Marc 2015) and as a supporter of Barack Obama, speaking at the Democratic National Convention in September 2012 in favor of his re-election whilst addressing voter apathy.

And without a doubt, Washington’s acting prowess is evident by her ability to take on shock-factor, mind-tripping hostage storylines in stride. Of course, we have Shonda Rhimes, a formidable force in the land of television herself, to thank for all of this, and we get to with #TGIT!

“Thank God It’s Thursday” signifies Rhimes’ domination of Thursday nights on NBC with Grey’s Anatomy at 8 p.m., Scandal at 9, and How to Get Away With Murder at 10.

One thing is for sure, and it’s that the Scandal cast is a close-knit community. One gander at Washington’s Instagram and it’s filled with adorable cast selfies.
