WATCH: Stephen Colbert Wants to Be Pope Francis’ Friend

Inside the First 'Late Show'
It almost didn't happen...

Dear Pope Francis: please make this celebrity BFF pairing a dream come true.

Stephen Colbert took to his talk show on Thursday (Sept. 24) to join in on the fanfare surrounding Pope Francis’ first-ever visit to the United States.

Responding to recent comments the Pope made about how has “felt used by some people” he thought were his friends, Colbert offered himself to be one of the few friends in the pontiff’s circle. The spectacled funnyman also boasted about his Latin language skills and joked about how Francis shouldn’t have joined the squad we can’t stop talking about.

And then the Late Show host blessed us with song.

The pontiff’s schedule in New York on Friday includes a speech at the UN’s General Assembly, a Multireligious Meeting for Peace at the 9/11 Memorial Museum, a drive through Central Park, and finally Mass at Madison Square Garden. His Holiness will leave for Philly on Saturday before returning to Rome Sunday night.

Watch Stephen Colbert sing for the Pope, above.
