We still can’t believe they broke up.

But incredibly, it’s been nearly a year since Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton decided to end their 13-year relationship. They first met on the set of Burton’s Planet of the Apes in 2001, and have two children together.

Now, Helena is finally breaking her silence on the split. The 49-year-old actress talked to Red about her relationship with the famous director, who she worked with in many of his films, from Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street to Corpse Bride and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

When talking about their relationship, she said:

“I could write a thesis on what’s happened and it is all-absorbing when a relationship breaks down, but I think we’re coming through it, and I think we’ll have something very precious still. Our relationship was always somewhat special, and I think it’ll always remain special. We did find each other.”

Bonham Carter seems to have come to terms with the split, and she remains positive about what came of the relationship, telling the mag:

“[T]he mark of a successful relationship shouldn’t be whether you’re there forever after. Sometimes you’re not meant to be forever together. Sometimes you have to come to terms with the fact that that was it. But that was a gift, a massive gift. We gave each other children and a lot more else.”

She also talked about looking forward to turning 50 next May, saying, “I’m going to say hello to my 5-0 – because otherwise when I’m 60 I’ll be going, ‘Oh, you should’ve enjoyed your fifties.'”

Helena is gearing up to release her new movie, Suffragette, which deals with the suffrage movement of the late 19th and early 20th century.
