Ashley Benson Gets Flack for Posting Cecil the Lion Halloween Costume on Instagram
The actress is receiving a lot of negative feedback after posting to Instagram a questionable Halloween costume of Cecil the Lion, who was illegally killed by an American dentist for sport in his national park home in Zimbabwe back in July.
Benson originally captioned the photo, as seen in the screen grab below, “Help! Can’t decide on my Halloween costume this year! What do you guys think of this cecil the lion costume?”
After realizing that the photo was considered offensive to some fans, she changed her caption to: “Help! Can’t decide on my Halloween costume this year! What do you guys think of this lion costume? @yandy #thanksyandy #halloweencostume”.
Available for purchase on Yandy for $$118.95, the “Cecil the Lion Costume” is described:
Show your support for all wildlife in this limited edition, Cecil the Lion costume featuring a light brown, crushed velvet romper with long sleeves, a zip up front, attached lion tail, a cheeky cut back and a deluxe, faux fur trimmed hood with lion ears.
20% of the proceeds of our limited edition, Cecil the Lion costume will be given to a Global Conservation Organization to support global conservation initiatives.
Considering the fact that the 13-year-old lion’s senseless death sparked worldwide outrage, it’s understandable that some thought Benson’s caption and post was insensitive, and the costume exploitive of a wild animal’s death, especially since it uses the charity angle as a marketing tactic.
