WATCH: Taylor Swift and Ryan Adams Talk Dreams, Songwriting and John Hughes Movies

These two had a lot to chat about.

Ryan Adams sat down with Taylor Swift during an interview for GQ to talk about everything having to do with music. And Siri. They also talked about Siri.

“You get really bored, you can ask it a bunch of, like, stupid questions and it gives you back, like, sassy answers,” Taylor begins the interview. “How long have you ever gone asking Siri stupid questions?” Ryan asks. “Longer than I care to admit,” she responds.

The indie rocker, who covered Taylor’s entire 1989 album, talked with Taylor about songwriting, and asked if any of her lyrics began as dreams. Taylor then dove into a story about where she thought up the lyrics to her track “All You Had To Do Was Stay.”

“I had a dream that my ex showed up at my door, knocked on the door, and I opened it up and I was about ready to launch into, like, the perfect thing to say, and instead, all that would come out of my mouth was that high-pitched chorus of people singing, ‘Stay!'”

Aside from writing lyrics, Ryan also talked to Taylor about where to find inspiration. “If I’m ever stuck when I’m writing, I can just put a Smiths record on,” he said. “For 1989, I’d watch John Hughes movies.” Taylor said, saying she’d pause the movie and try to put herself in the character’s perspective to gain inspiration.
