WATCH: Demi Lovato Was ‘Conflicted’ When Her Abusive Father Passed Away
Demi Lovato took inspiration from her own life to write her new album.
That’s something that most artists do. But one track in particular is very personal to Demi.
The 23-year-old, who is currently promoting her new album Confident, shared what the track “Father” means to her in an emotional new interview shared to her YouTube page. The singer opened up about mental illness, and how it affected her family.
“I was very conflicted when he passed,” she said about her father. “He was abusive, he was mean, but he wanted to be a good person, and he wanted to have his family. When my mom married my stepdad, he still had this huge heart where he would say, ‘I’m so glad that he’s taking care of you and doing the job that I wish I could do.'”
Demi’s father, Patrick Lovato, passed away in June of 2013, and Demi talked about his own struggle with mental illness.
“He knew he wasn’t capable of raising a family, and it was because of his mental illness. To know that it wasn’t fully his fault really was saddening to me. I wanted to write about it. I wanted to process it,” she said.
